Hampton Plantation Historic Site, McClellanville, South Carolina is home to an 18th-century plantation that was one of the many Revolutionary War sites that served as a place of refuge for women and children during the war. The rice fields surrounding the property hid Francis Marion when British troops arrived at Hampton Plantation to search for him.

The house was constructed for Captain George Tate (1700-1794) and his family who had arrived in the Colonies around 1750. Tate served as the Senior Mast Agent for the British Royal Navy, overseeing the cutting and shipping of white pines from Maine to England.

It is an outstanding example of Palladian architecture, and the only plantation house on the Ashley River to survive intact through both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. It is a National Historic Landmark.

He hired Carrere & Hastings of New York to design the mansion in the late 18th century style. The house and gardens have recently been restored and are now open to the public.
