On October 5, 1939, Adolf Hitler flew to Warsaw, Poland to take the salute at the Grand Review of his victorious troops. The route was carefully chosen to avoid those parts of the city that had been devastated by aerial bombardment, and the streets were lined by Nazi troops to keep the crowds in check. This precaution, however, seemed unnecessary since Warsaw’s population stayed indoors, and the procession made its way through almost deserted streets.
