'Elephant Man'. This Wednesday, Bradley Cooper joins the short line of attractive men who've played John Merrick, the title character of the "Elephant Man." The sold-out stage production runs until Aug. 5 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. The 'Elephant Man' is a very powerful play worth an evening at the theater.
John Hurt's roles at the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s included Kane, the memorable first victim of the title creature in the film Alien (a role which he reprised as a parody in Spaceballs);would-be art school radical Scrawdyke in Little Malcolm; and "John" Merrick in the Joseph Merrick biography The Elephant Man, for which he won a BAFTA and was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Actor. Hurt played Winston Smith in the 1984 adaptation of the novel Ninet
john merrick aka 'elephant man.' He only lived to be 27, travelling in a european sideshow when he was unable to hold down a job. He was eventually robbed by his manager and abandoned in Brussels. abandoned by his family in the late 1800's, he lived the last days of his life in display in an English hospital.
John Hurt as John Merrick, The Elephant Man (1980) This true story brought to the big screeen still brings me to tears. He was a noblemen and had better manners then men do today, yet he was treated like an animal because of his condition. He couldnt even lay his head down without sufficated because it was so heavy. Also stars a young and always amazing Anthony Hopkins.
