Mary Turner 1918 Eight Months Pregnant Mobs lynched Mary Turner on May 17, 1918 in Lowndes County, Georgia because she vowed to have those responsible for killing her husband arrested. Her husband was arrested in connection with shooting and killing Hampton Smith, a white farmer for whom the couple had worked, and for wounding his wife. Sidney Johnson. a Black man, apparently killed Smith because he was tired of the farmer’s abuse. Unable to find Johnson. the killers lynched eight others.

Between 1882 and 1968 4,743 people were lynched on American soil-3,446 of them where African American.The women above is Laura Nelson who was hung on a bridge over the North Canadian River along side her 15 yr old son, Lawrence Nelson. The pictures of the lynchings where later sold as postcards.
Crime
A lynching in Alabama, 1981. Two and a half years after the FBI took the case, Henry Hays and James Knowles were arrested. Bennie Hays was also indicted in Donald's murder but died before his trial began. Hays was convicted and executed in Alabama's electric chair, June 6, 1997. Hays was Alabama's first execution for a white-on-black crime since 1913, and also the only KKK member to be executed for the murder of an African-American during the 20th century.

In 1981, KKK members in Alabama randomly picked out a nineteen-year-old black man, Michael Donald, and murdered him in retaliation for a jury's acquittal of a black man accused of murdering a police officer. The Klansmen were eventually caught, prosecuted, and convicted, and a seven million dollar judgment in a subsequent civil suit bankrupted a subgroup of the Klan, the United Klans of America. click thru for article and photos
