Major General Charles George Gordon (1833 – 1885), also known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartoum, was a British Army officer and administrator. He saw action in the Crimean War, but he made his military reputation in China, where he was instrumental in putting down the Taiping Rebellion, regularly defeating much larger forces. For this, he was given the nickname "Chinese" Gordon and honours from both the Emperor of China and the British Government.

Highlanders see to the burying of the dead following Omdurman. Although the Mahdists suffered about 10,000 killed and at least an equal number wounded, the combined Anglo-Egyptian Force - numbering 8,000 British and 17,000 Egyptians and Sudanese - reported only 42 dead, and a few 100 wounded.
