SS-Oberscharführer Ernst Barkmann (1919-2009) was an ace tank commander on both the Western and Eastern Fronts. He won great praise in Russia where he became an expert in defeating Soviet armor and was decorated with both ranks of the Iron Cross. In 1944, Barkmann fought to stem the Allied invasion of Normandy, where he won his Knight's Cross. He concluded the war fighting near Vienna and he was taken POW. Barkmann died at 90 in his home town of Kisdorf where he had settled after the war.

Gen Frantz Böhme committed war crimes in Serbia by ordering the killing of 100 hostages for every one German soldier killed and 50 hostages for every wounded German. His actions led to the killing of thousands. After the war, he was put on trial but when his extradition to Yugoslavia appeared imminent, he evaded his guards and jumped to his death from the 4th tier of the Nuremberg prison where he was being held.:
