Begin New Traditions, with Classic Desserts! My Grandmother Estelle used to make this cake for us when we were children. She would spend the afternoon reading to us, then make her way to her piano and sing her heart out! She taught us to "perform" for Mother and Daddy, which we were always anxious to do. Chopped prunes add moistness to this spiced breakfast cake. This cake was a favorite of mine as a child - probably because it meant I could have cake for breakfast!

This is a very moist and rich cake. A little troublesome, but well worth it!

Everyone was baking this cake in the 70s! Spice Cake (shhh…Prune Cake)

I was fortunate enough to happen upon this recipe for my great-grandmother Iny’s Prune Cake a few years ago. Written by her frail, small hands, the recipe’s simplicity appealed to me. It's probably in my Top Five Recipes of all time. And it would make Grandma Iny so, so happy I’m sharing it with you.

I made this when my cousin wouldn't part with her recipe for prune cake, and none of the recipes I could find seemed to match the goodness of her baking. This is almost an exact replica, and for all I know could be exactly what she uses. You will find that this cake is a very old-fashioned quick bread that uses baby food to keep it moist and provide that extra burst of flavor. I am sure it will quickly become one of your favorites!
