The technique involves laying two beads of  mortar, followed by filing the insulation cavity in the middle (here it is filled with sawdust mixed with lime).  Then the cordwood is set in the mortar beads.  This provides an insulation R-value of 1.5 per inch of wall.  A 16" cordwood wall has an R-value of 24.

This beautiful cordwood garden shed was made almost entirely from recycled, bartered and generally not purchased materials. I would love to have a cabin like this out in the woods somewhere.

Cordwood The softer the wood, the better the insulation value and the less shrinkage or expansion. Insulation about R-1 per inch.
