~300M light-years away is the constellation Volans, AM 0644-741. Galaxies like this often get their ring-like appearance after galactic collisions. In this case, AM 0644-741′s appearance can be attributed to an “intruder” galaxy plunging through its disk. This particular one is ~150k light-years in diameter, 50% longer than The Milky Way. While it’s unlikely for celestial objects to collide during galactic mergers, they are prone to star formation (blue splotches) over millions of years.
