In preparation for an upcoming project we laid out some Eastern Hemlock to prepare for Shou Sugi Ban treatment. This ancient Japanese treatment is used commonly in Japan to treat siding. We decided to finish it with Rubio Monocoat.
The wood is carefully charred, doused in water and cooled. Once cooled, it’s brushed to remove dust and loose debris, and then cleaned, meaning washed and dried. The shou-sugi-ban can either be finished with a natural oil or left as is.
