Janusz Korczak 1878 - 1942. Educator, children's author, and pediatrician known as Pan Doktor (Mr Doctor) or Stary Doktor (Old Doctor). After spending many years working as director of an orphanage in Warsaw, he repeatedly refused freedom and stayed with his orphans right up to the end.

The photo was taken in Hamburg in 1936, during the celebrations for the launch of a ship. In the crowed, one person refuses to raise his arm to give the Nazi salute. The man was August Landmesser. He had already been in trouble with the authorities, having been sentenced to two years hard labour for marrying a Jewish woman.

An East German soldier helping a boy cross the newly formed Berlin Wall,  From what is known, the photograph was taken the day the emerging Wall was put up in August 1961 and the boy was found on the opposite side of the wall from his family. Despite given orders by the East German government to let no one pass, the soldier helped the boy through the barbwire.

Mikhail Bulgakov - Russian writer who wrote "Heart of a Dog" in 1925. It has a distinct anti-Soviet ring to it so the book was not published until the 1980s. For a man who was against what his government was for, he strangely was never purged nor sent to prison and he died of natural causes.... a rare thing.
