Marc Quinn: A self portrait that has been cast and frozen, made out of 4.5 litres of Quinn’s own blood, extracted over a period of about 5 months. And every 5 years, he’s updated the the project with a new version.

“ Back in fine artist Marc Quinn, (one of what’s now known as the Young British Artists) started the greatest self-portrait project of all time. Self (blood head) is a self portrait that has.

This is Marc Quinn’s most famous piece of work, Self, made using 4.5 litres of his own blood, which was slowly extracted from his body over a period of five months and frozen in a cast of his face. Quinn has been making these roughly every five years since 1991, and each one must be maintained carefully in fridges. The fragility of the media means exhibiting is difficult - the head has to be placed into a glass case which is chilled from underneath.

This is a sculpture (or mold) of artist Marc Quinns head made from liters of his own frozen blood. The blood is taken from this body over a period of five months. The work is then repeated every five years to establish a unique record of the artist aging.
