Sarah Vaughan in 1960. The jazz and pop vocalist is best-known by many for her version of “Send in the Clowns” and the early hit “Broken-Hearted Melody.” Born in 1924 in Newark, N.J., to musician parents, she won a talent competition at the Apollo Theater in 1942 that launched her singing career. Vaughan worked with Billy Eckstine and Earl Hines before becoming a solo performer. She was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989 and was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame in 1990.
