8-inch gun turrets on USS Lexington CV-2.
Lexington was designed and built in the early 1920s, and the Navy envisioned its carriers possibly having to fight traditional naval actions against other warships. By 1940 carrier airpower had made this idea obsolete, and Lexington and her sister ship Saratoga had the 8-inch gun turrets removed during a refit period in 1942 at Pearl Harbor, replacing them with 5-inch guns for anti-aircraft use.
