All of Willy's life he has been hung up on the American Dream and when he could not achieve it, he wanted his sons to achieve it. When Biff walks out on Willy and all of Willy's hopes for Biff, Willy is heartbroken and takes it personally. This really shows the prominent theme of the Betrayal by Family Members.
