Ottoman karabela, 18th century, a rare scimitar from the Ottoman Empire and east Europe. It appears on the battle field in the late 17 c. and was in use up to the 19 c. Early Kilij shaped blade, 32 inches long, with a shallow fuller and a 10 inch raised back edge with gold koftgari inlay of Arabic inscriptions, crossguard with down pointing quillons, elephant ivory grips set with green stones. 19C. (?) blue velvet (recent) scabbard with silver mounts. Total length 39 inches.
