For Roman-Catholic little boys, until about the 1960s it was very popular to play "mass", inclusive all the cheaply produced altar utensils and a tiny book of prayers/missal. To be serious they also dressed up like little priests. However, pictures of boys and girls, dressed up as monks or nuns are rather scarce in the Netherlands. Albumen print c. 1920. The little statue is an engelic guardian, who would guide and keep the little souls until they were confirmed within the RC community.
