This image, taken with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, depicts GAL-CLUS-022058s, located in the southern hemisphere constellation of Fornax (the Furnace).
On the Hunt for a Missing Giant Black Hole
Astronomers are searching for signs of a supermassive black hole in the galaxy cluster Abell 2261. Scientists think this galaxy underwent a merger with another galaxy, which could have caused a newly formed larger black hole to be ejected. Astronomers do not yet know what happened to this giant black hole.
Galaxy Survives Black Hole’s Feast – For Now
The hungriest of black holes are thought to gobble up so much surrounding material they put an end to the life of their host galaxy by creating an energetic object called a quasar. Now, researchers found a galaxy that is surviving the black hole’s ravenous forces, continuing to birth about 100 Sun-sized stars a year.
Echoes of the Universe's Creation
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will detect vestiges of sound waves that once rippled through the primordial cosmic sea. According to new simulations, Roman’s observations could extend these measurements into an unprobed epoch between the universe’s infancy and the present day.
