First Grade Writing Prompts - Winter
These are great prompts to print out and pass out to students to write on about different types of essays as well. The students would practice their organization skills again through the chart provided with the prompt.
a graphic book with the words who is in the picture? and what is happening
This is a great tool to introduce narrative writing. They could write a tiny story out of whatever picture they choose to draw out. The activity takes the students step by step to write their very own narrative.

FREE 4-Point Writing Rubric (Checklist) for Expository Writing Grades 4-5 (NYS)
This resources include various different kid friendly rubrics for students to use when they are either peer editing their papers or self editing. I could pass out this rubric and have the students use it.
a puzzle piece with the words main idea and details in black and white on it
Using a Puzzle to Teach Main Idea and Details
This is a great chart to use with ESOL and regular students. This comes with its own story to use it with. However, it could also be used on its own with any other type of story because of how broad it is. This is a great tool to teach students to find the main ideas of a text.
an expoptory writing worksheet with the words expoptory written on it
This is a great sheet to have students place in their writing notebooks or for students to simply have when starting to talk about writing their own expository essays. Students could have the liberty to choose which prompt they would like to write about.

There are a lot of different printable essay planning maps for students of different levels. I would use these for the expository essay prompts I put earlier in this folder.
a poster with the words personal narrative organizer on it
Nikki and Nacho
These are personal narrative writing ideas chart, checklist and graphic organizer for beginning writers. These would be great tools to use with not only ESOL learners but with regular students who still have a hard time when writing.

Realistic Fiction Graphic Organizers
These are graphic organizers for when students have to write their own stories. I could start the idea of writing essays with ESOL kids by having them do this organizer and having them write a crazy story. After they make up their own story, I would present the idea of them writing a story about something that really happened to them.
