This is the red color phase of Pinesap (Monotropa hypopytis). There is also a less-hairy, earlier-blooming yellow variant that is sometimes split off as a separate species. Pinesap lacks chlorophyll, and like other members of its family obtains nutrients via a myco-heterotrophic relationship with the mycelia of certain fungi, particularly Tricholoma species.
