Anytime students turn in an assignment, they are supposed to draw the smiley face that explains how they feel about it in the top corner of the paper. This is a good way for the teacher to get a better idea of who is understanding the material and who needs more help. Also, it is more private than having to raise your hand in front of the class and admit you don't understand something.
Conversation chips are a great way to hold students accountable for discussion while at the same time limiting the amount each student can participate.
