The Holy Face of Jesus Christ
The Mandylion, also known as the Image of Edessa - is one of the most famous and important images in Christian art. The legend of Mandylion has deep religious significance and historical roots. Legend and origin • Legend of King Abgar: According to legend, King Abgar V, ruler of the city of Edessa (modern Sanliurfa in Turkey), was seriously ill and heard about the miraculous powers of Jesus. He sent his messenger to Jesus with a request for healing. Jesus could not visit the king in person, but he sent him his icon made by hands, a cloth that miraculously reflected his face when he wiped his face with it. • Relic in Edessa: The Mandylion was kept in Edessa and was known for its miraculous properties. Over time, this relic gained great popularity and became one of the most revered shrines.
