Crataegus persimilis 'Prunifolia' Another Hawthorn Option. The finest autumn fruit is produced by Crataegus persimilis 'Prunifolia', a small, spiny tree with long thorns and outward-stretching branches that resemble the spokes of an open parasol. In late summer its red haws contrast vividly with the shiny, deep-green leaves before turning to deep-red in September just as the leaves drop. Several planted together look rather handsome.
