Thousands of LED Lights Bring an Abandoned Underpass to Life - Artist Bill FitzGibbons has transformed the dark, uninviting environment of the 18th Street underpass in Birmingham, Alabama into a rainbow-lit tunnel in his installation LightRails. Built in 1931, the tunnel's Art Deco design is lit up with a network of thousands of LEDs which are hooked up to a computerized system so the artist can program from 16 million different options, varying speed and colour to create different moods.

Using a neglected street underpass in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, artist Bill Fitzgibbons created a site specific art installation controlled by a computerized LED light system. The project titled "Light Rails" illuminates the dark and uninviting underpass with thousands of colors encouraging pedestrian traffic in a vital connection between two growing areas of downtown Birmingham.
