The Dogon people, a reclusive tribe who occupy a region in Mali, south of the Sahara Desert in Africa, their astronomical lore goes back to 3200 BC. According to their traditions, the star Sirius has a companion star which is invisible to the human eye. This companion star has a 50 year elliptical orbit around the visible Sirius and is extremely heavy. Sirius A was not seen through a telescope until 1862 and was not photographed until 1970. Sirius is only 8.6 light years from Earth.
