Over the linen shift were put linen stays, heavily reinforced with whalebone in order to mould the torso to a certain shape & provide a rigid form on which the gown could be arranged. The linen hoops, stiffened with whalebone or cane, shaped the petticoat to the appropriate silhouette, which profile varied from round, to square and flat, to fan-shaped.
