Aerogel - World's Lightest and Lowest Density Solid

Want to own a small piece of the world's lightest and lowest density solid known as frozen smoke?

Researchers in the #US have developed new methods for #manufacturing transparent silica aerogel composites that are significantly cheaper and stronger than current materials. The technology could provide single-pane windows with both thermal and sound insulation. http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/2016/06/windows-transparent-cheap-aerogel-thermal-sound-insulation #vacuumchamber #aerogel #composites #materialsresearch #technology #MDCVacuum #vacuumtech #vacuumtechnology #freezedrying

‘Stuff Matters’ explores the science behind everyday objects - MATERIAL MAGIC Sometimes called “frozen smoke,” silica aerogel can protect skin from an open flame because its airy structure makes it a great insulator.

Amazing Aerogel: Strong as Steel, Light as Air

There is an amazing material that is lighter than Styrofoam, stronger than steel and the perfect heat insulator – and most people have never heard of it.

Aerogel (also called ‘frozen smoke’ because of its hazy blue appearance), is a truly remarkable material. It is the lightest and lowest-density solid known to exist next to aerogrphite, and holds an unbelievable 15 entries in the Guinness Book of World Records, including best insulator and lowest density solid. Aerogel is composed of 99.8% air and is chemically similar to ordinary glass. Being one of the world’s lightest known solids, it weighs only three times that of air.

Aerogel - “frozen smoke”, is empty space and a fantastic insulator — if you had a shield of aerogel, you could easily defend yourself from a flamethrower. It stops cold, it stops heat & could build a warm dome on the moon.
