The Greek shield (hoplon) was made of wood with bronze attached. Etruscan Montefortino helmet, 4th century B.C. Heavy cast bronze calotte with a decorated finial on top and surrounded by a shaped border with lines and hatchings, narrow perforated rear peak. Iron oxide impressions on the surface of the skull (presumably from decorative iron elements or a helmet plume fork), and two-piece, trefoil cheek-pieces with riveted strap hooks. Armor of Henry II of France, detail view, ca. 1555, steel, embossed, blued, silvered, and gilt, one of the most elaborate and complete French parade armors, retains much of its original coloring. The surfaces are covered by dense foliate scrolls inhabited by human figures and a variety of fabulous creatures that derive from the Italian grotesque. The crescent moon, one of the badges of Henry II (reigned 1547–59), appears in several places, 53 lb. 4 oz. (24.20 kg), height, 74 in. (187.96 cm).
