Large watermills like this were vital in the agricultural revolution taking place at this time. With more grain being produced than ever before, thanks to the three-field rotation, having a mill was essential for an efficient farm system. Monks used the grain to make flour, beer, and bread. This is a popular source which I found on Pinterest. I learned what a large scale process it was to work a mill.
