A Japanese farmer wearing a mino (straw raincoat) and a sugegasa conical hat is carrying a pole with buckets of (probably) night soil. Early 1880s. Night soil was collected from private homes and used as fertilizer.

Australian Aboriginal water carrier. These were made from a Bangalow palm leaf base by the Midginbil people of the Mt. Warning caldera who utilised the extensive Bangalow palm forests in their territory for many resources, including creating vessels for carrying food, water, babies & equipment. This basket is in the Midginbil Museum, Midginbil Drive, South Tweed Heads.

With a few simple modifications, the same five-gallon barrels used for storage can be repurposed to solve a major barrier to clean water access for millions of people.
