Viking brooch

Material: bronze, tinned. Dimensions: diameter 30 mm. Date: 9th-11th century C.E. Description: decorated in Borre-style FindID: SF1-25. Metal detector find, from Frisia? judging by the title of the website.

During the viking age in Scandinavia, women often wore elaborate sets of oval brooches with strings of beads and associated jewelry pieces depended from them as a status symbol. This is my interpretation of one such set. Bronze, Antler and Glass.

This elegant openwork brooch was found in a churchyard. The skill needed to make it indicates that it was probably worn by a man or woman of some importance, and the brooch would have been considered a symbol of prestige. The main ornament is a snake with round eyes biting the underside of a four-legged animal, which in turn bites itself.
