Here's a simple Union Jack template to print on A4 paper and colour in. If you like, you can even cut it out, attach a stick and turn it into a proper, waveable flag! Printing

As promised, here is my pattern for the Union Jack flag garland! Union Jack Flag Garland You need: light fingering yarn in red, white and blue and3.5mm needles Gauge: 7 stitches = 1inch worked in stockinette stitch Cast on 16 stitches in royal blue. Follow the pattern below in stockinette stitch for the remaining 26 rows. Bind off in blue. Weave in ends and block. String flags together to create a garland. Hang up and enjoy your festivities! A free tutorial for a patchwork square Union Jack pattern cushion cover. Perfect for the 2012 London Olympics!

I'm a very blessed Australian designer, one of a few who are given bundles of gorgeous Tilda fabrics to play with months before they ever dress a quilt store shelf. Playing with them is sooooo easy, but the difficult part is wanting to show you and not being able to....until....the big day arrives. When 'that' day arrives and all is revealed you discover pretty new projects popping up everywhere across blogs, Instagram and Facebook which we've all been hiding away secretly, patiently counting down to the moment when we can swing wide our sewing room doors and let you inside! The newest Tilda line is called "Circus" and it will be in stores on April 1st. As soon as I saw them it was the blue and red which caught my eye and I said out loud, "A Union Jack, I'm going to make a Union Jack!" Having a family line which I can trace back to the 1600's in Wiltshire, England, and being of good First Fleet British convict lineage through my g-g-g-g-grandfather, as well as Scottish lineage through my g-g-g-g-grandmother who arrived as a convict with the Second Fleet, the Union Jack means a great deal to me. So on a very overcast and rainy day I set to work sewing a Union Jack pillow for our home and decided to share the pattern with all of you lovelies who may so inclined to make one too. The remainder of the pattern is HERE as a free tutorial style download, much easier than scrolling the blog, right? A few things I'll share though.... This is a VERY easy pattern for beginners. It all begins with a simple 4-patch block... ...and the crosses are simply cut and sewn in place with blanket stitch applique. It's really just building layers. Now, I have never ever, not even once, used my sewing machine for blanket stitch applique. I always applique by hand because I enjoy it. However, layering these cross pieces of fabric was going to create some severe cramping in my hands as it would mean sewing through numerous layers by the end. So...I followed my friend Rosie's advice about using the applique stitch on my machine and went for it! She does curves and shapes on her machine (and I think Allie does too?) but I was quite content to just sew along all those straight pieces and save my fingers from cramping this time round. I won't be machine appliqueing my embroidery work but it was fun to try it on this project. You could also raw edge the fabric crosses, or zig zag. Oh, and I didn't use fusible web for the applique, just pinned the fabrics in place. The block trims to 16 1/2" and after adding quilt wadding to the cushion front and hand or machine quilting, add whatever pillow style backing you like. Mine had a zippered closure, but you may prefer buttons or a simple envelope style. I machine quilted 1/4" inside the blue triangle shapes, and also 1/4" inside the red crosses. Honestly, this was such fun to make, but I did learn one thing about machine applique. It's the most horrible thing to unpick if you make a mistake, and I did. But let's not spoil what was mostly a wonderful rainy afternoon in the sewing room, ok? Tilda fabric in North America? Yes! You can purchase from the Canadian store Willow Cottage Quilt Shop. At the start of June 2012, the Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee. Coupled with the fact that we are also hosting the Olympics this year, Twenty Twelve is set to put Great Britain on the map! We certainly all fell in love with the Royal Wedding last year. The pageantry and pomp and circumstance was such a wonderful spectacle. And, quite frankly, any occasion that enables me to hang out the bunting, eat Victoria Sponge, drink Pimms and enjoy afternoon tea, is one that I intend to fully embrace. I am more of a visual learner and love all the wonderful free tutorials online. I have learnt nearly everything about sewing from an online tutorial somehow or another. So this is my chance to give something back to the wonderful sewing community in blogger blogland. I couldn't find a free online block, so this is how I made my Union Jack block (without paper piecing) in mostly pictures and a few words. Materials Needed:- 1x rectangle of fabric 10"x14" mine is Green with Blue spots; 2x WOF (Width of Fabric) 42"x2" in different colours mine are 1x Pink and 1x Blue; 1x WOF 42"x0.75" of plain White; 1x WOF 42"x 1and5/8" of plain White; 2x WOF 42"x1" of plain White; Use a 1/4 inch seam allowance throughout. 1. Sew the two unequal White strips, to the long side of whichever colour strip you want to use as your diagonal crosses. 2. It will look like this once sewn and pressed open:- 3. Now cut that strip into quarters. 4. Now sew two of the quarters back together along their short side but make sure that you have flipped one around. Its important that you sew this strip together so that it ends up looking like the picture below. ***I had to unpick my flag on the first go because my thick strips ended up on the wrong sides, so beware!*** 5. Now take your piece of rectangular fabric and cut in in half on the diagonal. 6. Now sew your strip into it with a 1/4" seam allowance, ensuring that the join in the strip ends up in the middle of the block. ***Again make sure that your thick and thin white stripes are in the right places as its so easy to mix them up and then your flag will be wrong*** 7. Now measure this strip. We will be trimming half of this measurement off of each piece after the next diagonal cut. 8. Now cut the block in half on the other diagonal and trim 1and (just over)3/8" inch off of each side along the diagonal. 9. Sew the other strip into the middle. ***Double check again that yours looks like the picture below with the thick and thin white stripes*** 10. Next cut the main block in half along the short side of the rectangle and this time trim either side of the cut by 1and1/8" (one and one eigth of an inch). 11. Then cut each part in half again this time along the long side and trim the middle of each side by 1and1/8" again. You should end up with four rectangles that measure approximately 6 1/4" x 4 3/4" (Six and a quarter inches by Four and three quarter inches). Each one as below. 12. Now take a 1" strip of White and sew it along the bottom of the top two rectangles and along the top of each of the bottom rectangles. Trim the white strip to size as you go. 13. Then sew a 1" strip of White along the inside edge of each of the rectangles. Trim the white strip to size as you go. 14. Now take the 2" coloured strip (mine is blue) and sew it to one inside rectangle side. Cut it down to size. Then join it to the other half. 15. Repeat for the top. 16. Nearly there! Now sew one long strip of the 2" fabric across the whole length of the inside, first to the bottom and then to the top half. 17. You are finished!!!!!!!!!! Hip hip hooray! HELLO LONDON! It thought this might be fun since the Olympics are just around the corner. I dig the Union Jack flag because it makes me want to shout “GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!” or just plain rock out to a Sex Pistols song. Either way, this will give your décor a distinctively hip flavor and have your friends talking about how cool you are. Rock out! YOU’LL NEED 2 pieces of 15” x 20” pieces of blue plaid 1/4 yard of red plaid fabric 1/4 yard of white cotton fabric Red and white thread Sewing machine with zigzag capability Straight pins Pillow stuffing Sewing needle and matching thread HERE’S HOW 1. In white fabric, cut out a strip that is 20” x 3 1/2” another strip that is 15” x 3 1/2” and two strips that are 25” x 2 1/2” 2. In your red plaid fabric, cut out a strip that is 20”x 2 1/2, another strip that is 15”x 2 1/2” and two strips that are 25” x 1 1/2” 3. Working on a flat surface, lay your 25” long white fabric strips in a big X on the pillow. 4. Lay your white 20” strip horizontally across the middle of the pillow. 5. Lay your 15” white strip vertically down the center of the pillow. 6. Carefully pin everything in place. 7. Using white thread, zigzag over all of the edges of the white to keep it in place. 8. Lay your 15” piece of red plaid vertically down the center of the pillow centering it on the white. 9. Lay your 20” piece of red plaid horizontally across the center of the pillow centering it on the white. 10. Cut both of your 25” pieces of red plaid in half. 11. Lay a strip on one leg of the X and trim it at an angle where it meets the cross like you see in the photo. 12. Do this on the other 3 legs of the X 13. Pin all these pieces in to place and zigzag all around each piece. 14. Clip your excess threads. 15. Place your other piece of blue plaid fabric on top of your design (right sides together) 16. Sew both pieces all the way around using a 1/2” seam allowance and leaving a 5” long hole so that you can turn it inside out. 17. Clip the corners at an angle (this is done so that you don’t’ have excess fabric in the corners of your pillow) 18. Turn the pillow right side out through your 5” hole. 19. Stuff will pillow stuffing. 20. Sew hole closed with your sewing needle and matching thread. Here's another version switching up the colors and using a wide ribbon instead of the fabric strips.
