The first time I teach the spelling of the final /k/ sound is when I’m teaching digraphs and blends. I introduce <ck> and explain when that grapheme is used. (It is only used at the end of base word following a short vowel.) At this time, I’m only looking at words with short vowels because that’s where I’m at in my sequence. Students learn that the letter <k> is used when a consonant comes before the /k/ sound.   Then, we revisit this rule again during the silent e unit and teach students that we also use <k> following a long vowel. This is also the time we teach <ce> spelling /s/.
