Rabbit colony set up

Colony raising rabbits is a rewarding method of raising rabbits. There are a few basic how to's to succeed in setting up a colony.

Should you raise your rabbits in cages or let them live in a colony? It's a tough decision, but each method has its pros and cons, depending on your setup and goals. Since I’ve tried both, I’ll share my experience so you can decide what works best for you!

We’ve been raising rabbits for meat off and on for years. From the beginning, I sought alternatives to traditional cages. We started out with rabbit tractors, which worked great for small numbers but weren’t really scalable. Then, at our old house, we started a colony and it was the perfect answer, until the goats pushed on

When you decide to start raising meat rabbits, the first thing you’ll have to do is set up some sort of rabbit housing. The main options are wire cages, hutches, colonies, and tractors. Here are some pros and cons of some of these options based on my own experiences.

Here's another good shot of the whole enclosure. The box in the front of the enclosure is a box that's 2' x 8'x 10" with 1/2" wire over it. It's supposed to be a feeding and water "station" that will catch the majority of they're poop. I will soon fill it with composting worms. You can also see the PVC lines for the automatic watering system. It's tied to a rain barrel just out of the shot.
