The Pripyat amusement park was scheduled to open on May 1, 1986 in time for May Day celebrations. However, the explosion at Chernobyl Reactor #4 on April 26, 1986 changed Pripyat and the surrounding areas forever. Although the other rides in the park were opened for a few hours on April 27 to entertain people before the evacuation, the ferris wheel was never used. (201311131150435D3308f)
