Bruce is Leslie's "eyes", he sees more than most people. Despite his intelligence and gift for knowing a person's weakness, he's seen as a simpleton because of the difficulty he has with words. He would rather be seen as a harmless simpleton than have people take advantage of his gifts anyway.
