Mrs. Garrabrant's Classroom: Ocean in a Bottle, Animal Art Projects, etc.

Of course this week we had another busy week! First we did a whole class science experiment in order to make an ocean in a bottle. We have been learning about the 3 different zones in the ocean: sunlight, twilight, and midnight and we wanted to make our own zones in our bottle. In the bottom of the bottle, we put water and colored it blue. Then we added oil on top of the water. The middle picture showed what it looked like after we did that. The final picture shows what our 'ocean' looked…

Layers of the Ocean - Deep Sea Creatures on Sea and Sky

Scientists have divided the ocean into five main layers. These layers, known as zones, extend from the surface to the most extreme depths where light can no longer penetrate. These deep zones are where some of the most bizarre and fascinating creatures can be found.

5 depth zones have been identified in the ocean. Life is most abundant in the uppermost ‘euphotic’ layer, where photosynthesis occurs. The mesopelagic is practically dark, and many creatures hide here during the day. The bathypelagic zone begins at 1,000 metres, where the pressure is nearly 100 times greater than at the surface. Below that lies the abyssopelagic zone, down to the sea floor-except where ocean trenches cut through the sea bed, creating what is called a hadopelagic zone
