two soldiers saluting each other in front of an american flag

Happy Birthday America! This Flag represents all of us! Color, religion, sex, sexual preference does not matter. If you were born or live in the U.S.A. you won the lottery in life. God bless you and this great country. Remember people risk their lives daily for this flag. Most in ways you will never know. Some protecting freedom and fighting to keep them others risking their lives escaping their homeland in hopes to be a part of this great country. Big Salute & Happy 4th of July to all!

The humble SALUTE has its origins in Medieval times. When an underling wished to address a superior officer on the battlefield, he would raise the visor on his helmet with a flourish, so as to identify himself to his officer. As time went on and metal body armor became obsolete, the gesture of respect was retained, and the term expanded to include any formalized gesture of respect, including the gesture we know today, or the ritualized firing of weapons, or a musical tune in someone's honor.
