Split Rock Lighthouse is located just south of Silver Bay, Minnesota, USA on the North Shore of Lake Superior. The structure was designed by Ralph Russell Tinkham and was completed in 1910 at a cost of $75,000. It is built on a 130-foot (40 m) sheer cliff of anorthosite. The lighthouse was first lit on July 31, 1910. It was built in response to the loss of ships during the famous Mataafa Storm of 1905, in which 29 ships were lost on Lake Superior. Probably closer to the edge than I should have been! Noup Head was designed by David A Stevenson and first lit in 1898. It was one of the first lighthouses to be automated back in 1964. The keepers' houses were demolished afterwards.
