Hugelkultur: Roughly translated from the German, hugelkultur means ‘mound culture’. It means building large raised beds with pieces of rotten wood embedded in the base. As the wood decomposes, heat is generated and beneficial fungi appear. This system really maximises water retention, and as the wood shrinks, air pockets are formed (creating space for the roots of whatever you are growing). Over time, this process creates a raised bed that is very rich and full of nutrients.
