Euro 2012 recently began and, for those of you who don't know, it's the European football championship. European football is what we Americans call

DIN 1451: Designed in 1931 for the German standards body DIN – Deutsches Institut für Normung – it looks and behaves as if it had been produced today. It extols all of the principles of the Bauhaus and has not dated in any way.

German designer Mark Bohle certainly has a knack for poster design, boasting a portfolio of work that showcases skilfully drawn typography and illustration that manages to be at once wonderfully weird and very concise.

In the first of a new series, we look at Germany’s creative culture, which is both forward-thinking and respectful of the country’s rich history.

The facilities of Giesinger Bräu can be visited, and they offer guided tours of the brewery. For these tours, I designed a gift certificate (Gutschein) revolving around lock and keys as a symbol of granting access. German graphic designer Anton Stankowski (1906–1998) was a master of the minimal—and a pioneer of what was referred to as “constructive graphic art” that involved using photographic media.
