Plumage is golden-yellow with a black head, blue wing patch, and yellow stripe on rear crown. At 23 centimetres and 85 grams it is one of the largest tanagers of the Andes. Bright yellow below, a blue back and black head. It has red eyes unlike other mountain-tanagers. Sexes alike.
