What is Adrenal Gland? Definition of Adrenal Gland The adrenal glands, also called suprarenal glands, are a pair of glands occurring on the top of kidneys and produce different steroid hormones. Adrenal glands consist of two distinct structures; the adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla, both of which are different in structure as well as functions. ... Pathophysiology Of Addison’s Disease Addison’s disease is a rare endocrine disorder also know as Primary adrenal insufficiency which happens when the adrenal gland is not able to produce enough hormones the body needs, particularly the aldosterone and cortisol hormone. The adrenal gland has 3 layers or zones •	Zona glomerulosa: This is the outer most layer and it secretes aldosterone. Aldosterone belong to a hormone family ( RAAS ) Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone-System. ⁃	Renin: a protein enzyme which stimulates the production of aldosterone ⁃	Angiotensin II: Stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce aldosterone ⁃	Aldosterone: This is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex, which plays a crucial role in regulating electrolyte balance, fluid balance, and blood pressure Cortisol Hormone, Anterior Pituitary, Electrolyte Balance, Adrenal Gland, Adrenal Cortex, Endocrine Disorders, Pituitary Gland, Adrenal Glands, 3 Layers

Regulation and Action of Cortisol Hormone. The hypothalamus responds to particular stimuli by releasing corticotropin-release hormone (CRH), which stimulates the anterior pituitary to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH stimulates the adrenal cortex to release cortisol. Cortisol increases the availability of nutrient molecules to support the response to stress. (Direction of arrows between the blood and effectors indicates the net movement of the nutrients.) The HPA axis, or hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, is a complex set of interactions between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal glands. It plays a critical role in regulating stress responses, mood, digestion, immune function, and energy storage and expenditure in the body. The pathway of the axis results in the production of cortisol.
