APOD: 2015 May 31 - Supernova 1994D and the Unexpected Universe
Long ago, far away, a star exploded. Supernova 1994D occurred in the outskirts of disk galaxy NGC 4526, visible as the bright spot on the upper left of this Hubble image. It is estimated that a supernova occurs about once every 100 years within the Milky Way galaxy, but many are not visible from earth because they are obscured by the large regions of gas and dust present in many parts of the galaxy. However, astronomers observe several supernova each year in other galaxies. (NASA-APOD)
