I've played a lot of sports myself & watched a lot more in my 67 years, but I don't believe I've ever seen a more inspiring moment of individual courage than Keri Strug's performance in the 1986 Olympics: after destroying her ankle in a previous, failed vault-attempt, she completed the twisting Yurchenko (perhaps the most difficult move in women's gymnastics) and received a score of 9.712 (out of a possible 10.000), leading the U.S. team to its first-ever gold medal in women's gymnastics.
