B-17's in formation over the Ruhr Valley on their way to a bombing target in Germany in the Fall of 1944.  My father took this photograph on one of his seven missions.   Most of the targets at this point in the war were focused on the destruction of Hitler's capacity to refine and store synthetic oil.
