images we’ll never forget:Twins, the Jewish giant at home with parents; the man in hair curlers; the identical twins who haunted Stanley Kubrick, he shot a similar pair in “The Shining.” remarkable photographs Arbus gave us in a brief, brilliant career, which ended with her suicide in 1971, at 48. photos of the ungainly and freakish brutal, tempered by compassion. Asked whether her photos were cruel, “these people wanted to have their pictures taken .. They like being paid attention to.”

Diane Arbus was born, to a wealthy Jewish family, in 1923. Her mother Gertrude was the daughter of the owners of Russek's Fur Store. Diane (pronounced Dee-Ann ) was a privileged child, raised with her two siblings in large apartments on Central Park West and Park Avenue. Daine said of her childhood "I grew up feeling immune and exempt from circumstance. One of the things I suffered from was that I never felt adversity. I was confirmed in a sense of unreality."
