PETER THE GREAT'S half-sister SOPHIA ALEKSEYEVNA (1657 - 1704). Regent of Russia from 1682 until 1689. She ruled while her brothers, Peter I and Ivan V, were too young to be crowned. For plotting to keep him from inheriting the throne and generally working against him the 16 year old Peter had her arrested and exiled to the Novodevichy Convent where she died in 1704.
