The seaplane carrier Wakamiya. This Imperial Japanese Navy ship originally was a Russian freighter captured during the Russo-Japanese War, modified into a seaplane carrier just before World War I. It participated in the Battle of Tsingtao, where its four Farman MF.11 seaplanes were used for reconnaisance and bombing. Probably the earliest example of seaborne air raids, they flew 49 attacks during the campaign. Later it was turned into a regular aircraft carrier and served until the early 1930s. The lowest of the commissioned officer ranks, the same collar tabs without a star would be worn as insignia by a Warrant Officer. While these tabs are a reproduction , the exact placing of a single start is somewhat unclear as both styles, center (as shown) and closer to the front, were used. The 3 completed ships of the I-400 class were the largest submarines of the world until the 1960s. 122 meters long and displacing 6670 tons; they had 8 torpedo tubes and several guns. Also being submarine aircraft carriers, they carried 3 M6A floatplanes. The 401 was launched in January 1945 and didn´t see combat action, eventually surrendering to the USS Segundo. Vice Admiral Nakamuta Kuranosuke (1837-1916). During the Boshin War the Saga samurai commanded the frigate Choyo, being the only Imperial ship sunk in the naval Battle of Hakodate. Later he headed the Naval Academy and eventually became Chief of Staff of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Then he sat on the Privy Council, being highly critical of the First Sino-Japanese War. The Hachijo Royal Resort, a luxury hotel on the Japanese volcanic island Hachijō-jima. Built during a tourist boom in the 1960s, one of the biggest hotels in the country at that point, it was finally abandoned in 2006. The island has been settled for several thousand years and has been used as prison island for exiles and banishments until the Meiji Restoration. Today the island has some 7,5k inhabitants. A Type 2 Ka-Mi amphibious tank, captured and crewed by Australians, 1945. This efficient Japanese World War II vehicle was produced in 1942 and 1943, with over 180 units built. They were used by the Special Naval Landing Forces, the marines that were subordinate to the Imperial Japanese Navy. It had two hollow steel pontoon sections which could be detached after landing. Armed with a 37mm cannon and two machine guns, and crewed by 5 men, they saw service in the Pacific.
