1774-1787 British Naval captain's coat at the National Maritime Museum, London - From the curators' comments: " An undress coat for a captain of over three years seniority. It is made of blue wool fabric with a felted finish and features button back lapels. The rank of the wearer is indicated by the groupings of the buttons on the lapels. In this case, the 12 buttons on each lapel are arranged in groups of three which indicates the rank of a captain with over three years seniority."
